Bespoke Furniture At Nina’s House
Nina’s House is a new concept bespoke furniture store, which has recently opened on the Kings Road.
The store, which is named after the owner, Nina Bigbie, proudly houses a captivating compendium of skillfully handcrafted pieces created from materials that bring harmony and beauty to any room.
Nina, who was born in Copenhagen, educated in the US and has been based in London for the last 20 years has always had a passion for design. Her career started in international property development and construction, her most recent project being a luxury chalet complex in Gstaad, Switzerland, which has played host to many VIP guests. She has now expanded into design and furniture sourcing. The inspiration behind Nina’s House came from working with awkward spaces.
From sloping Swiss chalet roofs to narrow London Townhouses and Scandinavian loft conversions, commissioning furniture in odd shapes and sizes became the norm, and in turn brought to life the concept behind Nina’s House; for clients to create their own pieces to make the best use of their space. With a strong belief that furniture and design should have a sense of fun, the love of combining classical and contemporary furniture with eclectic accessories such as up-‐beat cushions, recycled lights or rustic stools is what Nina’s House encapsulates.
Wood is a staple material within Nina’s House as Nina herself has a true love of nature. The owner says, ” Wood has both a beauty and soul and if the design is interesting, it’s very appealing. The absolutely crucial thing about high quality wood is you need to touch, feel and smell it to fully appreciate it. Wood adds warmth to any interior and complements the ‘cool steel, stone and glass’ and ‘raw industrial look’ interiors well. It is the type of material that improves with age just like good wine; it lasts forever and can be recycled endlessly. Recently I also discovered that working with reclaimed urban material is great fun. It creates the perfect balance between nature and our city lives.”
All the wood used in store has great character. Many of the tables are made in Bosnia, which is home to one of the largest selections of sustainable woods in Europe. It is produced in the mountains by a talented firm ARTISAN using a mix of modern technology and old artisan skills. Another extremely exciting and unique element to be incorporated into Nina’s designs will be the use of Italian BRICCOLE; the reclaimed wood from Venetian pier posts which has been partly immersed in water, and so it tells a story and creates an interesting and fascinating texture.
Nina’s House successfully combines a busy retail store with thriving and talented individuals who work closely with clients’ and relieving the stress of interiors. The staff work tirelessly to ensure clients’ aspirations are met no matter how radical they may seem. The experience of visiting this store is ever exciting; with its stunning array of furniture, fabulously feathered lampshades, retro embroidered cushions and eccentric design using reclaimed urban and rustic material.
