On the stage of "The Great Gatsby" film
When it comes to the amazing life and place of residence, it is impossible to ignore Great Gatsby. Last screening with Leonardo Di Caprio and Tobey Maguire in the lead roles has become not only a feast for the eyes, but also it inspired fans of textile design.
Classic elegant suits made of cloth with light warping and luxurious silk and damask not only take viewers into a bright and pulsating world of the 20s, in which the events of "The Great Gatsby" were unfolding. "I was amazed that the events of this work have been provided with a film set design," - says Tobey Maguire, performer of one of the main roles. "Certain details were especially notable for me, they were so naturally integrated into the event and looked so certain that I easily believed in the fact that everything happens for real."
Perhaps the most important elements of the picture were luxury residences of Gatsby and the Buchanan family. They symbolize the differences between neighborhoods and their residents - between "East Egg and West Egg" on Long Island. "East Egg and West Egg were absolutly different," says director of the film Baz Luhrmann. "The residents of East Egg were people of noble birth with a large fortune. They were surrounded by people of West Egg - quickly became wealthy greedy crooks and charlatans. The collision of these two worlds is huge and obvious in the course of the history".
"The task of the buildings was to make an impression," - says the artist-designer Catherine Martin. "The director wanted the building to be huge and breathtaking and a kind of competition for the Daisy’s favor". "Gatsby’s villa with add-ons above the roof is based on the model of real homes," - adds Baz Luhrmann. "But in fact it is a kind of Disneyland, because in our interpretation Gatsby's house is the fruit of our imagination - a playground for adults. In our version of Gatsby’s villa numerous items of buildings were collected, that Baz showed me "- says Catherine Martin. It looks like a gothic castle in France. On the one hand, it is a lonely house, and on the other - a haven full of luxury and beauty. Here an extremely Gatsby’s ambitious begins, his optimism, his romantic soul, which would do anything to achieve its goal: to win a greater love, Daisy.
Gatsby’s house consisted of several different elements. The pool, which has a special meaning in the work, was a separate element, and extended from the terrace down to the beach - which was actually located in the "Dolls Point" in Sydney. The shooting took place in Australia, it was possible only thanks to the experience of the artist-designer Catherine Martin. Room for a game of cards, a large dance hall, stairs, organ and a three-tiered garden were installed on the same stage. It was the basis for sensational staging of parties’ scenes, as well as a touching scene of the meeting of Jay Gatsby and Daisy against the background of waving curtains.
While non-residential Gatsby’s castle is a categorical representation of wealth, the Buchanans’ house on the river symbolizes wealth, transmitted through many generations. To do this, the artist-designer had created a magnificent manor house of red clinker brick, stables and manicured gardens - the characteristics of the American aristocracy. This contrast Catherine Martin shows very close to the viewer. The fact that she is a virtuoso in the field of interior design, has become known not only for "The Great Gatsby" and her collaboration with Baz Luhrmann in the production of "Moulin Rouge." In her trademark style of creating interiors there is a visible love of exclusive materials such as carpets, fabrics and textile wallpaper. If you note some of her design elements are also presented in the film.
